Montevideo, Uruguay - Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of LACNIC, has been designated today in Stockholm, Sweden, as Chairman of the Internet Society's (ISOC) Board of Trustees. In 2008 Mr Echeberría had been designated by the members of ISOC -organization to which LACNIC is affiliated to- to occupy a seat in the Board of Trustees. Now, he was elected to lead the Board for the next two years.

The appointment of Mr Echeberría, first Latin American to occupy this position, represents a great recognition to LACNIC's efforts in the promotion of the growth and stability of the Internet in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as to its projection and influence in the international sphere.

The Internet Society (ISOC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet related standards, education, and policy. ISOC is the organizational home for the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards, including the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). The Internet Society acts as a facilitator and coordinator of Internet-related initiatives around the world.
