More than 70 participants from 17 countries from the region of Latin America and the Caribbean gathered the 16 and 17 of July in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, at the LACNIC CARRIBEAN 2 event. The event was held back-to-back with the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) 25th Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition and counted with the support of TSTT (Blink Broadband) and ICANN.

During the opening ceremony there where present Ms Regenie Fraser, Secretary General of CANTO, Ms Bernadette Lewis, Secretary General of the CTU, Mr Stephen Abhiraj, Deputy National Chief Information Officer in the National ICT Centre, and Mr Ricardo Patara Registration Services Manager of LACNIC.

The main purpose of this regional meeting was to foster a greater participation of the Caribbean members in LACNIC priority work areas and to analyze topics related to security and policy issues in the region.

During the first day, the agenda included two technical workshops; the first one was focused on IPV6 adoption, followed by presentations about implementation experiences of IPv6 in the Caribbean, IPv6 in the last mile, IPv4 depletion and transition to IPv6. The second technical workshop focused on Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), and the Importance of an IXP in the Caribbean was also discussed.

The second day of the meeting LACNIC gave institutional presentations about its main activities such as the development of policies for the assignment of internet resources, the IPv4 and IPv6 resources allocation, initiatives to strengthen the region, participation mechanisms, discussion forums, among others. An emphasis was made on LACNIC´s Security Project (Security and incident response) and Certification Project (RPKI), projects in which LACNIC is currently working.

The meeting concluded with a report about the Caribbean participation in LACNIC XII which was presented by representatives from the Caribbean who attended LACNIC´s annual meeting last May in Panama.

This meeting gave the Caribbean Internet community an opportunity to learn a lot more about LACNIC, its institution and activities such as the development of policies for the assignment of Internet resources, the IPv4 and IPv6 resources allocation, initiatives to strengthen the region, participation mechanisms, discussion forums, etc.

During the closing remarks, Mr. Ricardo Patara was thankful for the support of the sponsors of this meeting: TSTT and ICANN, as well as for the local assistance of the local organizers from CANTO.
The meeting counted with simultaneous translation in 2 languages (English and Spanish) and was retransmitted live via webcasting. This allowed a greater participation, especially for those who could not attend the meeting in person.

The organization of this meeting followed the main purpose of the active policies of LACNIC which are to foster the participation and the involvement of the Internet community of the region in its activities.
