Dear friends of the LACNIC community,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy new year to everyone who, in one way or another, is part of our community: LACNIC members and all those who participate in LACNIC activities and mailing lists, the true force behind our organization.

Practically every day of the year that is now ending has been filled with new activities and challenges.

February saw the exhaustion of the central pool of IPv4 addresses, undoubtedly one of the most important milestones in the history of the Internet which made the need for a speedy adoption of IPv6 even more tangible. We have continued to promote IPv6 deployment, seeking new strategies that will allow us to improve results now that time is running out.

We have constantly striven to provide more and better services, and this year we have worked hard to create a new department within the organization aimed at better serving the needs of our customers. The organization has reached a level of maturity that allows us to hold two annual meetings with more than 300 participants each, plus a special meeting in the Caribbean region.

Last October we broke the 2000 member mark, a figure we could hardly have imagined nine years ago when we created LACNIC. This renews the organization's commitment to the search for excellence.

2012 will be a very special year for the LACNIC community, as it is our tenth anniversary and a year when the level of IPv6 deployment achieved in our region will be decisive. Next year we will continue to work to strengthen participation mechanisms and involve a larger number of regional stakeholders in a model that keeps evolving in order to provide more efficient responses to the interests of our regional community.

Happy holidays!
