LACNIC is summoning a consultation meeting with the aim of informing the actors of the regional Internet community (governments, civil society organization, business chambers and associations, academic networks) its activities, projects, achievements and goals, as well as to receive their opinion on the issues most relevant to the community.
LACNIC, an international organization based in Uruguay, is one of the five Regional Internet Registries that exist at global level and is responsible for the allocation and administration of IP Addresses and related resources for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to its main function, LACNIC’s Mission includes its desire to contribute to the development of the Internet and the Information Society within the region, promoting and supporting initiatives and facilitating interactions and cooperation among different actors in benefit of regional development.
LACNIC administrates Internet addresses within the region based on policies that are defined by the community through participative processes that are completely open and make it possible for all interested parties to affect said policies. Facilitating different means of participation is one of the key aspects of the work carried out by LACNIC and what has made this self-regulation model a successful experience.
LACNIC is committed to the agreements of the World Summit on the Information Society, which concluded in 2005 with the adoption of the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, and particularly to the calling these agreements make to reinforce cooperation between all parties interested in the issue of Internet Governance and the administration of critical Internet resources. Consequently, this meeting represents one further step to facilitate the participation of different actors in relation to issues that are of regional interest.
This meeting, which will have the participation of Mr. Markus Kummer, Secretary of the Internet Governance Forum, represents an opportunity to discuss extremely important issues such as the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses and the transition to IPv6. It will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Tuesday 19 August, 2008, from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM, at a venue to be announced on LACNIC’s website.
In addition, taking advantage of the presence in Montevideo of representatives of different organizations and other stakeholders who will travel to attend the LACNIC meeting, on Wednesday 20 August, from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM, LACNIC, the Association for the Progress of Communications (APC) and the Information Network for the Third Sector (RITS) are summoning a multistakeholder meeting, open to all interested parties, with the aim of identifying relevant issues and priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean that need to be included in the discussions and agenda of the Third Internet Governance Forum (IGF) that will meet at Hyderabad, India, in December 2008.
