On October 31, 2002, LACNIC was recognized by ICANN as a Regional
Internet Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean, culminating a
long process that successfully brought together the efforts of a group
of organizations that represented the regional Internet community.
This date marks eight years of the moment in which LACNIC emerged as one of the registries responsible for managing the Internet number resources.
"In these eight years we have worked to shape the initial idea that culminated with our recognition by ICANN," said Oscar Messano, President of LACNIC Board of Directors. "The region has now an organization adapted to its reality, where the community expresses itself, participates openly and engages in new challenges." "In 2010 we kept working with all relevant actors to promote the deployment of IPv6 and to ensure the availability of IPv4 addresses facing the imminent exhaustion of the central pool early next year. Our region is prepared in the best possible way to overcome this global challenge. Certainly, if we had not begun this path, the situation for our region would be very different today, "concludes Messano.
We want to celebrate another anniversary that is not more than a
reminder of the collective effort and vision of this group of people and
institutions who believed there was room to do something different with
a regional sense. They thought that the network was more than cables and
equipment, and that the region needed an organization to its height.
That day was the culmination of a process and also a starting point.
Eight years later LACNIC has become an effective instrument of the regional community that can actively contribute to the creation of opportunities for collaboration and cooperation for the development of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean.
