Security experts from telecommunications companies and universities that met at the Ninth Latin America and Caribbean Regional Internet Address Registry (LACNIC) Meeting – which is being held in the City of Guatemala, Guatemala – announced greater coordination for improving Internet security in Latin America.
The announcement was made at the closing of the First Latin America and Caribbean Network Security Meeting that took place in this city on May 24. Internet operators from Latin America and the Caribbean and prestigious specialists at world level such as Steve Crocker and Georgia Killcrece participated in this meeting, which was moderated by Latin American specialists Cristine Hoepers of CERT Brazil and Juan Carlos Guel of UNAM CERT Mexico.
One of Internet's pioneers, Steve Crocker, president of the ICANN Security Committee, observed that Latin America has a unique opportunity, as there are a great number of talented technicians in the region who are cooperating to achieve the best levels of security that will allow the immense development of the world information network to continue in the region.
The North American scientists is one of the individuals who developed RFCs (Request For Comments) as a tool that allowed scientists that were developing ARPANET to document advances and developments and thus share information. From that moment on the net has grown explosively.
In turn, Georgia Killcrece explained how CSIRTs work. CSIRTs are organizations in charge of handling and solving problems on the net. As she explained to the numerous audience present at the meeting, they are working groups that specialize in emergencies and developing procedures that will allow managing and dealing with security and other problems on the Internet.
As you may remember, the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Internet Address Registry (LACNIC) is the organization that administrates IP address space, Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), Reverse Resolution, and other resources for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in representation of the Internet community.
The LACNIC IX meeting will continue until Friday, May 26. LACNIC IX is being held in the City of Guatemala, hosted by the company OSI de Guatemala.
